Emily Addison

For me, womanhood blackness art can not exist with out one another. The three have seamlessly blended together through out my short life. I grew up in a very creative house hold. Both my mother and my father create visual art. They also guided me through the ever complex world of race and gender.

I try to cultivate a sense of ambiguity in my work. As a woman of color I feel constant pressure to define my self in all aspects of my life. Painting and illustration allow me to escape those confines and create a world that looks more like the one I’d like to live in. Art to me is freedom. This show and my piece in it show an intimate look at my internal dialogue between the masculine and feminine, black and white, and balance I seek between them.
